A-1 Pest Control North Carolina

How do ticks get into North Carolina yards?

February 28, 2019

With winter on its way out the door, we can all look forward to the spring weather that is surely on its way. As a result, any of the insect pests we had relief from the last couple of months will make their way back to plague us once again. Temperatures kept them at bay for a while, but no more. None of us missed ticks over the winter but they will be thriving as soon as the weather warms up. Now that the temperature is above freezing, we must be wary of going into heavily forested areas without proper protection. We must make sure to take appropriate steps to avoid these parasitic pests in the coming weeks.

Why Ticks Are Attracted to Our Yards

Ticks are a type of parasitic pest that depend on the blood of a host for survival. Without some warm-blooded creature to get their blood meal, adult ticks and newly hatched nymphs would not be able to survive. This is why ticks are so common once the weather warms up. New ticks hatch and begin climbing onto potential hosts as they brush by the place those ticks were hiding. Once a tick has gotten onto a warm-blooded animal, they can hitchhike their way into our yards.

How Ticks Get into Our Yards and Homes

Many people assume that if they don’t have pets, then ticks shouldn’t be as much of a problem. However, this couldn’t be further from the truth. Pets often do play a large part in why a homeowner may be experiencing tick problems in their yard or home. However, even people without pets can have major tick problems. Animals such as raccoons, squirrels, rats, mice, deer, foxes, and several other warm-blooded critters will often pick up ticks as they travel through wooded areas, and carry them right into our backyards. From there, rodents and pets can be the carriers that bring ticks from our yards into our homes.
