What Termite Damage Looks Like In North Carolina Homes

In May, we took a look at early termite prevention before summer. Now, let's look at some of the warning signs you'll be able to see all year long. This guide will help you recognize termite damage in your North Carolina home and show you what to look for in your yard. The last thing you want to do is miss termite damage when you see it. Subterranean termites cost U.S. property owners billions each year. Here's what you need to know.

Termite Damage Inside

Termites don't destroy your home in a weekend. It happens over time, especially in the summer when the temperatures are ideal for termite activity. Some of the damage you may see early will be:

  • Damaged belongings -Termites don't just eat wood. They will eat anything that has cellulose in it. Inside your home, this might be a pile of clothing, books, cardboard, etc. If termites feed on these materials, they will enter from a wall or floor. They won't chew their way out of the wall and walk across the floor to do it. In some cases, they might establish mud tubes to bridge a gap. It is important to look for these as well. If termites are damaging your belongings, you're going to have holes in those items, but this damage doesn't have a consistent appearance that we could describe.
  • Bubbling paint or wallpaper - Although worker termites don't have compound eyes and are considered blind, they are sensitive to light and will avoid it as much as possible. For this reason, they will often feed on wood until they get right up to the paint, wallpaper, or simply (the light) outside of their tunnels. This is the theory at least. Entomologists don't know for sure. But this behavior will make your wall surfaces begin to bubble where termites are busy feeding.
  • Dents - While subterranean termites prefer soft wood or wood that has been softened by moisture, they can and do feed on hardwood. If they feed on baseboards or window and door frames, you may begin to see honeycomb-like dents begin to form on the surface. Take something hard and bang it on that wood. If there are termite tunnels behind there, it should sound hollow. And, if there are enough termites focused in the one area, you may begin to hear a rustling noise. This is the sound of soldier termites banging their heads against tunnel walls to warn worker termites of danger.

If termites are not caught early, damage can begin to have a cascading effect. Support timbers damaged by termites can weaken and cause the structural frame of a home to begin warping. This is when you'll begin to see these signs of termite damage.

  • Doors and windows cease to function properly. When the frame warps, doors and windows can begin to stick, or open and close freely. This may have you sticking a piece of wood in your window to prop it open.

  • Floors sink. Houses can settle, so this isn't always a sign of termites, but when a floor begins to sink down and you notice bubbling, it is definitely a bad combination.

  • Ceilings dip. If your ceiling begins to look like it is being damaged by water, it might be termites.

Termite Damage Outside

When termites come to feed on your home, they are likely to feed on other objects in your yard. Their preference is moist wood but they can feed on anything that has cellulose in it.

  • If you have a garden, don't be surprised if termites feed on some of your veggies. They have a particular affinity for corn.

  • If you have a stump or a log, this will definitely be a target for worker termites. You'll need to chop off a chunk and look for tiny pale insects crawling around inside.

  • If you have a fence, termites may feed on the posts. You'll need to dig into the soil to find them.

  • If you have a shed or outbuilding that has wood that touches the ground, you may see the wood eaten away at the soil level.

  • If you have shaded areas around your home and wood that touches the soil in these areas, you may see termite damage near the ground. Look behind bushes and under external structures.

Subterranean termites are extremely destructive. When damage appears, reach out to the termite control professionals at A-1 Pest Control for immediate assistance.

    [content] =>
Termites are one of the absolute worst pest infestations that you can deal with, especially if you don’t get it taken care of in a timely manner. The potential for a serious termite problem can cause a lot of stress and anxiety, which is why it makes a lot of sense that it’s extremely common for people to be a bit on edge when they think they have termites.

While it’s good to be on the lookout, this fear of termites can cause a lot of people to misidentify a bug as a termite. But don’t panic! We’re going to point to some of the common identification mistakes that people make, and show you how to tell the difference between an actual termite and a bug that just sort of looks like a termite.

Termite Vs. Carpenter Ants

It’s pretty simple to mix up termites and carpenter ants: they’re both small, winged insects, and they both cause wood damage. The important distinction between the two behaviorally is that termites can cause a whole lot more damage than a carpenter ant can. To tell the difference between the two, let’s first take a look at each of them.

Here we have a termite:

And here we have a carpenter ant:

What are the main differences between the two?

Termites are broad-waisted, while carpenter ants are narrow-waisted.

Termites have straight antennae, while carpenter ants have bowed antennae.

Termites have 2 sets of equal-sized wings, while carpenter ants have one set of large wings and one set of small wings.

Termites are typically only visible in a swarm, while carpenter ants are a bit larger and usually more visible.

Termites vs. Citronella Ants

Citronella ants and termites are a very similar color, a sort of reddish-brown. Let’s instead focus on the differences, this time without wings. Here’s a photo of a group of termites:

Here’s a group of citronella ants:

They look pretty similar, right? The main differences to note come down to those distinct shapes we talked about earlier:

Citronella ants have narrower waists than termites.

Citronella ants also have distinctly larger abdomens than termites do.

Note again those antennae: the termites have straight antennae, while citronella ants have those slightly bent antennae.

These are two of the most common examples of termite misidentification! Keep in mind that if you are worried you have a termite problem, try to get a good look at the insect you’re looking at, and try to note body shape or antennae characteristics to make a determination. Also remember that you will usually only see a termite in a swarm and that a solitary termite crawling around is relatively rare.

Level 1 pests are the sort of pests that pose their own sort of danger, but they aren’t the type to pose a major threat.

Ladybugs - Ladybugs don’t cause any sort of destruction, and they don’t bite or spread disease. They can infest your home in large numbers, but their biggest crime is just being an annoyance and an unwanted guest inside your home. Ladybugs eat all sorts of harmful garden pests, so ladybugs in your garden can actually be a good thing.

Indian Meal Moths - Sure, you don’t want Indian meal moths flapping around your home and causing trouble in your pantry. These moths can definitely be an irritant with their ability to contaminate food, but as far as pests go, they’re a nuisance and nothing more.

Stink Bugs - Stink bugs aren’t a direct threat to humans -- mostly they just, well, stink. It’s a bit of a different story when it comes to agriculture, as stink bugs can be a serious threat to crops. But as far as house pests go? Stink bugs aren’t much of a problem -- besides their smell.

Most Ants - Excluding carpenter ants and fire ants, the majority of ant species that occupy homes pose hardly any threat at all. You still don’t want these insects wandering about your home, but they won’t hurt you and they aren’t big disease spreaders.

Level 2 - Somewhat Dangerous

Level 2 pests pose some threats to humans, but for the most part, they aren’t major disease spreaders, health risks, or causing serious home damage -- although some can trigger allergies, which is no joke!

Carpet Beetles - For the most part, carpet beetles aren’t a big problem. However, they can contaminate food and cause damage to clothing, blankets, and carpeting. They can trigger allergies in some people, which puts them a tier above ladybugs, moths, ants, and stink bugs.

Most Spiders - Outside of black widows and brown recluse spiders, the vast majority of spiders found in North Carolina pose little threat to humans. In fact, these spiders can do a nice job killing any other, smaller nuisance pests that live in your home, because many of those pests are spider food. Still, as unlikely as it may be, there’s a slight chance that some spiders will bite you, and even though bites from most common house spiders can’t even puncture human skin, it still makes them marginally more dangerous than level 1 pests.

Flies - It’s true that flies can spread germs and bacteria because they do tend to hang out in unsavory places like garbage cans and sometimes even on feces. So obviously this is gross, but is it actually a serious threat? For the most part, no. According to a recent study, the amount of bacteria a fly can transmit to a person isn’t really enough to make them sick, with the exception being babies, the elderly, and people in hospitals with lowered immune systems. They aren’t a non-threat, but they don’t match up to the pests in our next section.

Level 3 - Dangerous

This group of pests moves out of the “slight risk” category and qualify as downright dangerous, capable of causing health problems for some.

Stinging Insects - Although not every species of bee, wasp, and hornet are equally dangerous, on the whole, it hurts us to say that stinging insects are quite dangerous. Their stings can be quite painful and even life-threatening to those with allergies, and their nesting habits can at times cause serious structural damage to homes and other structures. They get a few bonus points for being the world’s pollinators, but that fact doesn’t make them any less dangerous.

Cockroaches - Cockroaches might be one of the most hated creatures on this whole list, and for good reason: They are capable of spreading bacteria and disease because of their penchant for hanging out in dirty places, and can contaminate surfaces with that bacteria causing diarrhea, dysentery, and salmonella. They are also capable of triggering asthma attacks in asthmatic individuals, and top of all that, they’re sort of terrifying.

Bed Bugs - While it might seem strange to loop bed bugs in with some of these dangerous insects- they don’t spread disease, and their bites at worst cause an allergic reaction- we think the psychological effects of bed bugs make them nearly pretty dangerous. In fact, those psychological effects are significant enough that there have been entire studies done on them and their potential to cause PTSD. We think that’s serious stuff.

Level 4 - Very Dangerous

This category is reserved for the pests that can really do some real damage, whether that’s to a person’s health or to a person’s living space. In our eyes, these are the worst of the worst.

Ticks - Ticks are usually not all that dangerous to humans. In fact, chances are you’ve gotten a tick before, and it hasn’t really been much of an issue. However, ticks do carry a number of diseases that can cause various health issues- like Lyme Disease- and even some that can be fatal, like Tularemia. That doesn’t mean you should panic if you get a tick bite, but it does definitely make ticks very dangerous on the whole.

Mosquitoes - Mosquitoes are a lot like ticks: usually not a huge problem, but on occasion a major problem. They transmit a whole host of serious diseases, most notably West Nile Virus and encephalitis. So, while those itchy bites do not seem serious at first, they are worth avoiding if you can.

Termites - Termites are a strange case, because you can go years with a termite infestation without even knowing they’re slowly gnawing away at your home. However, they are very dangerous insects for one simple reason: they can do serious and expensive damage to your home. It’s even possible for a termite infestation to get so bad that a structural collapse occurs. That financial risk puts them in the “very dangerous” category for us.

Are you having problems with any of these dangerous (and not-so-dangerous) pests? Some insects are just plain irritating. On the other hand, some insects can pose a real danger to humans through physical and economic harm. So which pests are significantly (or even…

    [openingParagraph] =>
While these types of crawl space conditions aren’t uncommon- in fact that are often the norm- they don’t have to be. Crawl space encapsulation can rectify many of these issues, and turn your crawl space from a sticky humid hot bed for insects and turn it into what it’s supposed to be: an easily accessible space to make plumbing and electrical repairs and a spot in the home that can improve proper air circulation.

Crawl space encapsulation isn’t the sort of job that you can do yourself unless you have an exceptional amount of experience doing it and a wealth of resources; in other words, you’ll probably need to contact a professional company that offers the services. The process can be broken down into 4 steps:

Thorough inspection and assessment that will help the service provider develop a plan of action.

Floor and foundation lining with a reinforced polyethylene liner that seals possibly moisture entry points and weak spots, and prevents any moisture from seeping in.

Sealing all openings in the sidewalls, including vents and doors leading to the exterior in order to stop the infiltration of outside air.

Humidifier installation, to remove excess humidity that causes moisture and mold issues. Special crawl space-specific dehumidifiers also discourage specific insects like termites and other wood-destroying insects, along with other pests.

Identifying Crawl Space Problems

We summarized some of the issues that can arise if your crawl space hasn’t had proper maintenance, but identifying those problems means having a little bit of knowledge on the warning signs that you have a problem in the first place. When it comes to insects, one telltale indicator is an unusual presence of any type of insect, like ants, cockroaches, or even crickets. This also goes for mice and rats; if you’re seeing an uptick in mouse or rat activity in your home, there’s a chance a dirty or moist crawl space could be to blame.

Aside from insects and rodents, air quality issues or unusual/uncomfortable amounts of humidity in your home can also be a signal that your crawl space is an issue. Trouble breathing is an alarming sign that can be caused by mold build-up that frequently occurs in crawl spaces because of mold inducing conditions like high levels of moisture and humidity and a relatively small, confined space. Inhaling mold can become a serious health concern, so if you’ve noticed or others who live in your home have noted difficulty breathing while in the house it’s important that you look into the possibility of mold presence as soon as possible.

A less concerning (at least on its face) sign of crawl space issues is an excessive amount of humidity in your home. One of the primary reasons crawl spaces are included in home construction in the first place is to improve overall air circulation, and in particularly humid climates like the ones we experience in North Carolina, this should help cut down on humidity levels in your home. If conditions in your home are excessively humid, you might have a compromise in your crawl space.

Getting Crawl Space Encapsulation Services

A-1 Pest Control doesn’t just offer treatments for pest elimination; we also have services for all things pest-related, from pest prevention to infestation mitigation. As a part of that, we offer our own crawl space encapsulation services created with the most effective and modern tools and methods available.

To ensure our services stay effective, we use only premium grade moisture blocking products and materials designed and tested to last long-term; as a part of this we also use commercial grade Santa Fe dehumidifiers which will keep your crawl space moisture-free. That means a large reduction in the chances that your crawl space will attract pests or begin growing dangerous levels of mold.

Insect infestations aren’t the only issue; crawlspaces can also create a bunch of other problems related to indoor air quality and other uncomfortable in-home conditions.
